These are the two choices of material we offer for standard printed decals. Each has its own features and benefits and we will attempt to highlight those on this page so you can assess the best choice for your particular situation.

OVERALL DURABILITY AFTER APPLICATION

For most modeling situations, durability is about the same. However, we might give the water slide a slight advantage in that it lies a little flatter and will have less tendency to catch an edge when wiping and cleaning, especially if the vinyl edges have not been post-sealed (which we strongly recommend). Ultimately, the durability of any decal will be enhanced by post-sealing after application.

EASE OF APPLICATION

Most old-timers and scale purists will tell you they prefer water slide simply because it was the standard in model decals for so many years and it produces excellent results when properly applied. However in more recent times, those of us who always seem to be in a hurry (the ARF set) will probably prefer PSA Vinyl which requires only that you cut out the shape, peel it from the backing sheet and rub it into place. It is true that water slide requires more "baby sitting" during the application to work out wrinkles and bubbles, but for that "painted-on" look, most agree water slide is the only way to go.

ACCURACY OF PLACEMENT

Water slide definitely gets the nod here. One of the key advantages it has is being able to accurately slide it into place on the wet surface. You can further enhance this effect by placing a drop or two of soapy water on the surface before sliding it into position.  PSA Vinyl, on the other hand, is backed with an adhesive that sticks on contact and is much less forgiving. You may or may not be able to peel it up without damaging it (or the surface!) depending on the substrate you are applying it to. Also, there is more of a tendency to trap air bubbles under vinyl just by the nature of the material.

SURFACE CONDITION

Water slide does best on glossy, very smooth surfaces. If your surface is dull, foam or fabric texture, you will be better off with PSA Vinyl. The vinyl will also adhere very well to glossy surfaces. In any case, the surface must be clean, free of dust, dirt, oils and other residue before you attempt to apply the decal.

OVERALL APPEARANCE

Scale modelers will almost always choose water slide decals when given a choice because of their ability to seamlessly blend with the surface. They are also slightly muted in color and brightness which gives them a more realistic "weathered" look.  The PSA Vinyl decals tend to be brighter and more vivid making them a popular choice for sport and fun-fly models.
